CONGRATS to RACHEL CLEAVER who was published earlier this year in the academic journal, Innovative Higher Education. Rachel worked tirelessly with the College of Science on the RADS program. This was a grant to recruit rural and diverse Virginia students specifically to the College of Science. It provided scholarship and mentorship to the selected students. We are so thankful for Rachel's work to make Mason a more accessible, diverse institution!

Q. How long have you been a part of Mason?
|
My entire adult life! I started at Mason straight out of high school, completed a bachelor's degree in Applied Computer Science, took a couple of years off, came back and completed a master's degree in Professional Writing, and now I work here!

Q: What does your usual
workday look like?
|
I create Salesforce reports that are used by Integrated Enrollment Marketing (IEM) to email prospective, admitted, and deposited freshman and transfer students.
|
Q. What are 3 words you would use to describe Mason?
|
Vibrant, Exciting, and Growing

Q. Tell us something about yourself and/or your family.
|
My husband and I met in the JC food court (next to the sushi display) our first semester of freshman year.

|

I'm curled up with a cozy blanket and a good book.

Q. Before working at Mason, what was the most unusual or interesting job you had?
|
I worked at Toys R Us for about three years, had some crazy Black Fridays and Christmas there. I also worked at Petsmart for a little over a year, taking care of fish, reptiles and small animals (and yes, I fed the snakes).
|
Q. What are 3 words you would use to describe Mason?
|
Challenging, Ever changing, and Adaptable
|
Q. What has been your favorite project?
|
Working on the Document Center Team Charter. Summer 2019, my team and I worked on creating a Team Charter to mirror the University's and the Enrollment Management's goals. It was a lot of fun brainstorming with my team essentially everything that our team stands for, and in the end, we created something everyone was proud of.
|
Q. What’s your favorite movie, TV show, and book?
|
Pretty much any scary/horror movie. All time favorite show: Scrubs. And I'm not much of a reader, even though I should.
|
Q. If you were stuck on an island, what 3 things would you bring?
|
A Wilson volleyball.

Happy February! I guess our chances of a snow day are quickly diminishing…so I’m ready for SPRING! I know we are in the thick of reading and yield season and I want to thank everyone for all the time they have and will continue to put in for the remainder of the cycle. I can see all the efficiencies we have gained through process improvements, better data integration and utilization of technology. At the same time the personal touches that our staff put into their work continue to make the difference to students and families every day.
|
By now, you have all seen the announcement that our Provost, David Wu will be leaving at the end of the term to become the President of Baruch College in NY. While the university goes through leadership changes with an interim Provost and a new President (hopefully to be named in the near future), our work and our goals remain unchanged. You all do great work and we’ll continue to stay the course and remain focused on serving students.

Admissions Operations

While it felt like January lasted FOREVER, February has been flying by. Admissions Operations hit the ground running in 2020, and we have a few updates:
|
The Transfer and Domicile Teams are very busy processing deferrals from Spring 2020, as well as the Fall 2020 applications. The Fall 2020 transfer application priority deadline is March 1. Patricia Granberg is our new transfer coordinator, and will begin training shortly.
|
The Transfer Credit Evaluation Team has been busy evaluating all of our recently admitted students for Spring 2020 and cross-training (especially on international) and updating the equivalencies via the online tool. Please note that automated notifications are still going out to students, regardless of IE status, once an evaluation is complete. Christina Mattos will be transitioning out of the office of admissions, and a search committee has been formed.
The Document Center continues to run smoothly, processing documents with minimal delays or issues. We are currently working on resolving duplicates in Banner and TargetX. Major thanks to this team for continuing to allow the rest of the office to operate efficiently.

The Graduate Operations Team rounded out the Spring 2020 applications, and is now full steam ahead for Fall 2020 applicants. We are now in one of our busiest periods of the entire year, and have started the Spring 2020 audit. As previously noted, we are currently working to incorporate a Summer start term, which will launch in March. The Graduate Operations team is now fully staffed.
|
The INTO Mason Team is continuing to look for areas where we can find efficiencies, as well as ensure that our communication with INTO is as clear as possible. We are working with INTO on several new initiatives, including AE+DE (Academic English + Direct Entry) and expanded work with full direct entry students.

Relationship Management

Is it spring yet? The weather might feel like winter, but the RM team is engaged in lots of planning for spring yield activities. In the midst of planning receptions in various locations throughout the country, from dinners to bowling (I cannot wait!) and so much more, we are gearing up to create lots of future Patriots! While we get ready for these events and some spring travel, we are also very busy reading fall 2020 freshman applications. Our application numbers are strong thus far, and we are trying to load up the enrollment funnel to get more Patriots here!
|
Our spring events season is also very busy. Hats off to Allison Wells and Ashley King for taking on a large role in planning amazing events! From Spotlight Days and Patriot Preludes, to the Honors events and Spring Preview, we have thousands of prospective new students to welcome to our campus. And as a reminder, Spring Preview is coming quickly later this spring. Please hold Sunday, April 19th for Spring Preview. We need as many members of our Admissions team present for this important event.
|
There are under 40 days until spring. Are you ready? I'm loading up on my allergy medicine to prepare! LOL.

WSP/K-12

WSP - We are working on the details for the summer conferences. We are planning schedules, hiring faculty, junior faculty, interns, and the logistics team. We are also in the midst of booking speakers and site visits for the students.
|
K-12 - Middle school visits are up and running for the semester. Look for Sydney with 200, 11-year old children trailing behind her on campus two to three days a week! We are working with units on dual enrollment initiatives and streamlining the process.
|
Envision - Mail is out for Envision and students are enrolling. We are preparing to register students in classes this summer and setting up courses with the Registrars' office.
|
|
Events - We held our biggest Spotlight Day ever on President's Day and are looking forward to the third and final Spotlight Day on March 16.
|

I want to let everyone know that we are watching the Coronavirus (COVID-19) very closely. We are especially focusing on how it will/may affect our applicants. At this time, all testing of TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, SAT, etc., have been suspended in mainland China until the end of March. Vietnam has also postponed all of their tests until the end of February, but that may extend into March. We are hopeful that once businesses start to open again the students will still have enough time to complete their applications. We are trying to formulate backup plans, just in case this continues far into the spring. Please let us know if you have any questions from applicants about this issue.

For our international spring travel, Meghan will be in Brazil from March 23 - April 8th visiting Florianopolis, Foz do Iguacu, Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza, and Belo Horizonte. Dennix will be in India from April 20th - May 4th visiting Delhi, Dehradun, Mussoorie, Shimla, and Chandigarh. We are looking forward to speaking to lots of students about George Mason!
