Dean's Office by Amy Takayama-Perez
Even though you wouldn’t know it by the weather, fall in Admissions is definitely here! We are in full swing with fall travel, events, and the launch of UG and GR applications for Spring and Fall 2020. We are also close to solidifying your Admissions office goals and each of your team leads will be presenting these at an upcoming Enrollment Managers meeting. Please make sure you are familiar with your team goals and how you will contribute to them for this cycle.
Thank you for attending our inaugural Dean’s Day sessions (and to Jen K for organizing). I think they have been very successful and I have been very pleased with our unit’s participation and thoughtful questions.
Many of us traveled to Louisville, KY for the 75th NACAC (National Association for College Admissions Counseling). This was a landmark event , as we voted to delete NACAC’s Code of Ethics and Professional Practices (CEPP), effective immediately. This was necessary change to comply with a year-long anti trust investigation by the Department of Justice. You can read the details of the changes here. We will continue to do what is in the best interests of students and families and will keep you updated on any future changes this might mean to process or procedures.
Can you believe that soon we will be celebrating the beginning of the holiday season? I’m in no rush to face the cold winter days, but I am looking forward to celebrating another successful year with all of you during our 2019 Admissions Staff Holiday party on Friday, December 13th starting at 5:30 pm in the Flammia home. Thank you in advance to Jen Flammia and her family for opening their home to us again! Please save the date, additional details about the event will be forthcoming. As always, you won’t want to miss the fun!
I look forward to seeing you during our All Staff meeting this Friday, October 11 at 2:00pm in the JC, Room G (337). For those of you out recruiting future Patriots, please be safe on the road!

Relationship Management (RM) by Melissa Bevacqua

It's hard to believe that the fall is upon us! With the weather getting cooler and the leaves starting to change, the RM Team is visiting places far and wide to meet with students interested in Mason. We are doing hundreds of high school visits and college fairs across the country. In the midst of this, we will also begin to read applications for admission sooner than we ever have before. We are gearing up to support our amazing Events Team as they organize our fall events. From Patriot Prelude to Fall Premiere and the Counselor Fly-In, it's going to be a busy season welcoming visitors to campus! For the first time, we are formally inviting transfer students to Fall Premiere. We are also hosting the first ever ADVANCE School Counselor Luncheon where around 20-25 high school counselors will come to learn more about ADVANCE, and the other paths for their students to Mason. We are excited to engage in conversation that will benefit the students we all serve.

Operations by Andrew Bunting

While yes, it is 'technically' autumn, it certainly doesn't feel like it (stay cool out there, everyone). Despite the warm weather, though, Admissions Operations s fully in fall mode in terms of processing and procedure.

The Transfer and Domicile Teams are very busy processing new applications for Spring 2020 transfer, which opened on August 1. Please remember that the GAA/priority application deadline for Spring 2020 is coming up on October 1. For this cycle, we have streamlined some of our processing guidelines in order to get decisions to applicants more quickly. Further, we have refined our domicile questions to ensure we are getting accurate data from applicants. Now that we have applications with actual data coming in from both TX and CA, we can confirm that these changes are in place and working. Major thanks to everyone on the team for their work on this project. The Transfer Credit Evaluation team continues to do amazing work by efficiently and accurately evaluating transfer credit for all of our new students, including our INTO UTP students (international transfer) and INGA Transfer applicants. As the transfer evaluation period comes to a close, the team will be busy cross-training and updating the equivalences via the online too. Please note that automated notifications are still going out to students, regardless of IE status, once an evaluation is complete.
The Document Center continues to run smoothly, processing documents with minimal delays or issues. Major thanks to this team for continuing to allow the rest of the office to operate efficiently.
The Graduate Operations team remains busy working on Spring 2020 and Fall 2020 applicants. We are preparing for our busiest period of the entire year, simultaneously working on multiple start terms and audit at the same time. To assist, the Office of Graduate Education has infused our office with funding for 8 part-time graduate-student wage employees to supplement the work we are doing. These positions have been posted to 'Handshake' and we are in the process of hiring them. As a result, the overall structure of the Graduate Operations team is changing to accommodate our expanding team. Please be on the lookout for an e-mail concerning those changes and new reporting lines.
The INTO Mason team is continuing to look for areas where we can find efficiencies, as well as ensure that our communication with INTO is as clear as possible. Ousswa will be attending the first ever INTO conference in San Diego to learn more about how other centers are working, as well as lend her expertise to the group, at large.
As always, please let us know if we can assist you in any way.

Washington Scholars Program (WSP) and K-12 by Elena Johnson

Teachers received their invitations to nominate students and their deadline to nominate is today! The team is implementing a new registration system this year entirely in SalesForce. The final touches are being placed on the system now and it will go live in time for student invitations in November. We are already crafting the 2020 schedules and building new partnerships to replace the Newseum. Marketing is in full swing, and we hope to register 1000 students by December 13, 2019!
Our middle school tour calendar is booked for the fall. Envision is dropping its invitations for summer programming in the coming weeks so expect questions while on the road. We are admitting students for Loudoun Science and Fairfax Math dual enrollment programs.
Fall Premiere is our largest open house for prospective students and will be held on October 20, 2019. Please email Rachel Urkowitz at [email protected] to volunteer to help. Every extra set of hands is so helpful when welcoming 3000 guests to campus - Thank you! The annual Alcanza college fair is October 23, 2019, and we are excited to welcome Danielle Pierre Bravo as the keynote speaker. Danielle is a producer at MSNBC and just co-wrote a book with the host of Morning Joe - Mika. She is a Dreamer and advocate for the Latino community. Please join us on October 23, 2019 for what is sure to be an inspiring message.
