Dean's Office by Amy Takayama-Perez
In about a month, our campus will drastically change as we welcome our new and returning students for the fall 2019 term. Once again, we are on track to enroll the largest Freshmen class in school history and are very close to meeting our transfer and graduate fall enrollment goals. I'm so proud of all of your hard work and hope that you and your families/significant others will join me and the rest of senior staff on Friday, August 23 starting at 5:30 pm for our Fall Kickoff BBQ at the Flammia home. Please RSVP via eVite by close of business on Monday, August 12. And in the spirit of spending more time together, please save the date for our Admissions Staff Holiday Party on Friday, December 13 starting at 5:30 pm, additional details will be forthcoming. A HUGE thank you to Jen and Tom for opening their home to the Admissions family.
Our third and last conference for summer 2019 concluded on Friday, July 19. I want to send a big congratulations and thank you to our WSP and K12 team for all of their hard work to make the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment (WYSE) and the 2 sessions of the Washington Journalism and Media Conference (WJMC) a success. I would also like to thank all of you who volunteered to assist with the execution of the summer conferences in any capacity. The way you support one another is really what makes us #OneTeam!
In August, we will kick off our Admissions’ Summer Training. Thank you to Julia Fellows for all her hard work coordinating the sessions, I know from experience that this is not an easy task! With the purpose of providing a different and unique perspective of our colleges, this year the Division for Enrollment Management will be hosting the Academic Deans of each school in a series of events called Summer Deans’ Days. I hope that you make every effort to attend the sessions or take the time to watch the recordings through the links that will be shared following the events. Additional information regarding our Admissions Summer Training and Summer Deans’ Days will be forthcoming.
While I know that we have all been busy planning, recruiting, processing, training and completing the many tasks required to help us reach our goals, I hope that you have all found the time, and will continue, to enjoy this summer with your families and friends. Thank you for everything you do for our office and each other!
Relationship Management (RM) by Melissa Bevacqua
he Relationship Management Team is busy planning for fall travel. It's hard to believe that we are nearly halfway through an already busy summer!
In the midst of some fun in the sun, we have been hard at work supporting Envision visits to campus, planning Summer Send Offs, planning and preparing for the upcoming recruitment cycle, and readying for the soft launch of the Mason Student Services Center (MSSC) on Friday, July 19th. As a part of this transition, the Office of Transfer Services is moving from Sub I to the JC Admissions Office suite. When a student checks in at the MSSC, if the student has an admission-related question or concern, they will be directed to the JC Admissions Office for assistance. When the student comes to the JC Admissions Office, they will be asked to fill in a form on an iPad or laptop which will then create a case that will go into the Admissions queue. The JC front desk staff will have oversight over the queue, and the Counselor of the Day will work from the queue to resolve cases, escalating as needed. We are having training on this new process, and know that there will be modifications along the way to the process as it evolves in order to meet the needs of the students we serve. We are pleased to welcome back to the office Kelly Beth Clawson following the birth of her beautiful baby boy, Leo! We are sad to announce that Dawn Swedberg is departing in early August to become a full-time grandmother. We will miss you, Dawn, but know that you will be doing the most important job ever caring for your family!
We are also gearing up for the Mason Escape on Friday, August 16th.
Operations by Andrew Bunting
The Admissions Operations team hopes that you are enjoying your summer and keeping cool! We continue to remain busy this summer, evaluating credits, completing files for both graduate and undergraduate applicants, and reviewing transfer applications.
The Transfer Team is currently continuing to evaluate incoming transfer applications in order to make our class. They have successfully participated in several transfer orientation sessions and are working on updates to the TargetX application.
The Transfer Credit Evaluation team continues to do amazing work by efficiently and accurately evaluating transfer credit for all of our new students, including our INTO UTP students (international transfer) and INGA Transfer applicants. We are now starting to evaluate AP and IB scores for new Freshmen. Automated notifications are still going out to students, regardless of IE status, once an evaluation is complete.

The Document Center continues to run smoothly, processing documents with minimal delays or issues. Major thanks to this team for continuing to allow the rest of the office to operate efficiently. The team is currently processing the CTUPs and HTFTs that are coming in.
The Graduate Operations team remains busy working on Fall 2019 applicants, though most deadlines have passed and the application influx is slowing. Updates are constantly being made to improve the application and review system. We are also in the process of making changes to the application, as well as deadline structure for all units.
The INTO Mason team is continuing to look for areas where we can find efficiencies, as well as ensure that our communication with INTO is as clear as possible. We conducted several meet-and-greet sessions with INTO staff members to help improve our relationship. The INTO Mason team continues to process applications for PW and GPW students within the designated SLA. We are working to further enhance the cascade process, especially for the UTP (transfers).

  1. Best vacation you have been to. I went to an island in the Bahamas during their "off season" and had the entire beach to myself.
  2. Before working in the Office of Admissions at Mason, what was the most unusual or interesting job you've ever had? The first job that I ever had was working at the Fairfax Corner movie theater as a Starbucks Barista. It was interesting learning the differences between a cappuccino and a latte, as well as how angry people can get when it comes to their coffee.
  3. What are 3 words you would use to describe Mason? Inclusive, dynamic, and of course Innovative!
  4. What's your favorite food? Anything spicy! Especially Thai and Indian curries.
  5. What does your usual workday look like? In other words, what do you do? My primary responsibility is to perform credential evaluations for international students who are applying to a graduate program. Credential evaluation involves determining whether the applicant's school is accredited, the U.S. equivalency of their degree and their GPA. I also process any external evaluations we receive and assist the Immigration Specialist as a Designated School Official with processing I-20 documents and issuing Form I-20s when needed.
  6. What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most? There is always an institution, degree or country that I'm not familiar with or have never evaluated, which means my job stays interesting!

  1. What has been your favorite project? I would say the website redesign….as painful as it was…it was exciting to create a more functional and appealing website.
  2. What does your usual workday look like? In other words, what do you do? Nothing feels typical in our office! Seriously, my day is spent mainly dealing with 4 distinct groups including perspective students using military and VA related benefits, current students signing benefits, internal partners and external partners. I also spend time ensuring we are in compliance with federal and state legislation. I take that very seriously since the university is dependent on our office to abide by a series of MOUs, pledges and Executive Orders.
  3. What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most? The people! From the staff to students, everyone truly cares about each other.
  4. Tell us anything about yourself and/or your family. My husband was an F-16 pilot and can’t even ride a roller coaster now which the kids find absolutely hilarious. We have 4 kids. My son is 24 and works for Senator Warner on the Hill. My oldest daughter is 21 and is going into her senior year of college. She was just accepted to as an early selectee for Teach for America in Dallas Fort Worth. Our youngest are twin 14 year old girls that keep us incredibly busy as year-round competitive cheerleaders and social butterflies.
  5. What are 3 words you would use to describe Mason? Collaborative, passionate, diverse.
  6. What's your favorite food? Chips and Salsa and a margarita on the rocks with salt.
