As our new and returning students fill our campus for the fall 2019 term, the energy around campus changes and the countdown to fall beings. Before we start a new cycle, I want to thank you for all of your hard work and dedication within the last year. I hope you know the importance of your respective roles in recruiting and enrolling our Freshman, Transfer and Graduate students.

I know that many of you are already working on processing applications for 2020 and the Relationship Management team will soon hit the road to recruit our #Mason2023 class. Thank you to those of you who joined us on Friday, August 23rd for our #OneTeam Fall Kick Off BBQ, I hope that you had a wonderful time. A HUGE thank you to Jen Flammia and her family for hosting our team.

Today, Tuesday August 27 we kicked off our Summer Deans’ Days series with a presentation by Dean Mark Rozell from SCHAR. I hope to see you on Thursday, August 29 when we will have presentations by Dean Mark Ginsberg from CEHD, and Dean Ann Ardis and Assistant Dean Felicia Carr from CHSS . As a reminder, unless you have an unavoidable conflict, your attendance is mandatory. The schedule for the Summer Deans’ Days presentations is attached for your reference.

Relationship Management (RM) by Melissa Bevacqua

The RM Team recently held an amazing retreat at the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation at our campus in Front Royal, VA. We were joined there by our regional recruiters, and it was a wonderful day getting to see endangered animals and doing some planning for the upcoming application reading season. Speaking of applications, workflows for freshmen applications will be launching later this summer, earlier than we’ve ever launched before, which means we will begin reading applications earlier than before. In addition, the team and I are planning for our upcoming travel season where we will visit schools and meet with students near and far as we recruit the next class of Mason Patriots. We will be traveling during the timeframe of early to mid-September until early to mid-November, but will be in and out of the office during that timeframe.

We also just hosted our Mason Escape for rising juniors. Hats off to the Events Team for organizing and executing a flawless event.

Operations by Andrew Bunting

After a quiet (yet incredibly busy) summer, there is a sound growing in the distance. It is the sound of thousands of new and returning Mason students converging on campus to start the fall term. The Admissions Operations team is ready to greet them and celebrate our successes, while simultaneously shifting focus to the next class.
|
The Spring 2020 transfer application opened on August 1, and those applications are starting to come in, even as the team continues to evaluate late transfer applications for the Fall 2019 term. While slightly behind, we should (fingers crossed) end up only just below our enrollment targets for transfer. The data shows that ADVANCE had an impact on this fall’s class. Our hope is that the updates that we made to the online application will help move the next applicant pool through the process more quickly, allowing us to get admissions decisions out sooner. The same can be said for the Domicile team and their processes, which have been updated to reflect the new SCHEV guidance.
The Transfer Credit Evaluation team continues to do amazing work by efficiently and accurately evaluating transfer credit for all of our new students, including our INTO UTP students (international transfer) and INGA Transfer applicants. As the transfer evaluation period comes to a close, the team will be busy cross-training and updating the equivalencies via the online tool. Please note that automated notifications are still going out to students, regardless of IE status, once an evaluation is complete.

The Document Center continues to run smoothly, processing documents with minimal delays or issues. Major thanks to this team for continuing to allow the rest of the office to operate efficiently. The team is currently processing the last of the CTUPs and HTFTs that are coming in. Holds will be placed on student accounts who are missing final transcripts the day after the last day to add for Fall 2019.

The Graduate Operations team remains busy working on Fall 2019 applicants, though most deadlines have passed and the application influx is slowing. We are currently working on the very late applications that are coming in. We are also in the process of making changes to the application, as well as deadline structure for all units. The overall structure of the Graduate Operations team will also be changing in the coming weeks. Please be on the lookout for an e-mail concerning those changes and new reporting lines.

The INTO Mason team is continuing to look for areas where we can find efficiencies, as well as ensure that our communication with INTO is as clear as possible. We conducted several meet-and-greet sessions with INTO staff members to help improve our relationship. The INTO Mason team continues to process applications for PW and GPW students within the designated SLA. We are working to further enhance the cascade process, especially for the UTP (transfers).

- What's your favorite movie, TV show and book? You may or may not know this about me, but I love to read. I read probably a couple hundred books a year so it is hard to pick a favorite. My go to is usually Pride & Prejudice and if I don't want to read it, i'll watch the BBC version of the movie because #ColinFirth
- Before working in the Office of Admissions at Mason, what was the most unusual or interesting job you've ever had? During graduate school I interned in the Governor's office with the Secretary of Education. Amazing to see how policies vary between states, counties, and even cities. I had the opportunity to meet with state Delegates and Senators to help shape some of the educational policies in Virginia!
- What are 3 words you would use to describe Mason? Underrated, evolving, and thriving!
- What would people never guess you do in your role? Every student that participates in the Accelerated Master's program at Mason is processed by me at some point. I help them transition from an undergraduate student to a graduate student! It is the only way that I regularly interact with the undergraduate population.
- What does your usual workday look like? In other words, what do you do? I hate to sound like a broken record but no two days are really alike. I have some standard processing duties but I generally spend my day problem-solving. I work closely with ATT on CRM issues, the Provost's office on requirement waivers, and the Registrar's office with special cases. I also have the pleasure of supervising 10 great people!
- What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most? I like managing a lot of different projects at once and collaborating across campus. I always want to understand the big picture in order to improve day to day operations. It also helps give me perspective.

- What do you like to do for fun? I think people probably know this, but I'm a huge DC sports fan (I know, it can be sad), but love going to games with family and friends.
- What does your usual workday look like? In other words, what do you do? I oversee the Freshman file reading process, monitor all Admission scholarship activities, manage all traditional recruitment activities, co-manage the student Telecounselors, and answer any random questions that come up because of my "super cool" Banner knowledge. Yeah....that's every day!
- What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most? The team. It's rare you get to work with so many people you consider good friends.
- Do you have a favorite quote or movie line? Share it with us! If you've worked with me long enough, you know my line: "It's just another day in paradise!"
- What are 3 words you would use to describe Mason? Family. Fun. Construction.
- What has been your favorite project? Starting the telecounseling program from scratch. Amy asked if I would re-start the program from scratch...gave me all the freedom to create and develop a team how I thought best. We started as 7 students, and this fall we will now have upwards of 37 students!
