Dean's Office by Amy Takayama-Perez
|
It finally feels like Spring! The weather is much warmer, and per usual in the spring, we are multitasking: processing applications, hosting events, planning the summer conferences and working on the logistics for fall travel. We stay busy all year around!
|
I want to thank those of you who volunteered for our Destination Mason: A Spring Preview event on April 13. We could not have welcomed over 3,200 guests to campus without without your hard work, dedication and support! I know that you will also do a wonderful job during our Patriot Prelude on April 25 and volunteering for the summer conferences. You are rock stars!
|
I want to send a big shout out to our events team who have gone above and beyond to ensure the success of every single one of our events, thank you! I would also like to thank everyone who joined Dr. Cabrera during his annual visit to non-academic units on April 16. I know this is a busy time for us, but I appreciate your efforts to represent our office during this event!
|
With summer quickly approaching, we are working on opportunities for us to spend some quality time together. Please save the dates for the Admissions Professional Development event on June 7 and our #OneTeam Fall Kick Off BBQ on Friday, August 23 starting at 5:30 pm at Jen Flammia’s home. Additional details about both events will be forthcoming closer to the dates.
|
Again, thank you for everything you do. I look forward to seeing you during our all-staff meeting on Friday at 2:00 pm!

Relationship Management (RM) by Melissa Bevacqua
|
The Relationship Management Team has been busy working to bring in the next class of Mason Patriots. With the May 1st National Candidates' Reply Date just around the corner, we are finishing up hosting events for admitted students throughout the country. Our most recent event took us to Montgomery County, MD for a fun afternoon of bowling with admitted students and families.
|
|
We are getting ready for the Patriot Visit Day (Junior Open House) on April 18 and the Admitted Patriot Prelude on April 25. We are quickly processing requests for further funding, and we refer students with need-based financial aid questions to their financial aid counselors. Bringing in this class is a great effort within the RM Team, and among all teams within the Admissions Office and IEM. We thank you for all that you do to support this important work in the life of the university. We can hardly wait for May 1st!

Operations by Andrew Bunting
|
As winter (finally) gives way to spring, the Admissions Operations Team remains busy in our respective areas supporting our applicants and new students. Please note that we currently have two open positions on the Domicile Team and are actively working to fill those. Thank you to those Operations Team members who are helping to cover this critical role while we fill those positions.
|
The Transfer Credit Evaluation team continues to do amazing work by efficiently and accurately evaluating transfer credit for all of our new students. They are currently working on Fall 2019 admits and IEs. Automated notifications go out to students, regardless of IE status, once an evaluation is complete. This team is currently preparing to work closely with the Registrar to further advance out credit evaluation process, specifically around time-limited transfer equivalencies. The Document Center continues to be a model of efficiency as well, processing documents with minimal delays or issues. Major thanks to this team for continuing to allow the rest of the office to operate efficiently.
|
The Graduate Operations team is busy working on Fall 2019 applicants. Updates are constantly being made to improve the application and review system. Major thanks to Crystal and the Specialists for helping to continue to document current processes to ensure functionality within the new system. We are now working to further streamline some of the issues that have been brought to light by virtue of the system being operational. Graduate Operations leadership will be visiting with the academic units to solicit further feedback over the next several weeks.
|
The INTO Mason team is now, once again, fully staffed. We continue to look for areas where we can find efficiencies, as well as ensure that our communication with INTO is as clear as possible. We conducted several meet-and-greet sessions with INTO staff members to help improve our relationship. The INTO Mason team continues to process applications for PW and GPW students within the designated SLA.

As always, please let us know if we can assist you in any way.

We are in the midst of planning the conferences, booking speakers, venues, and all that goes into the programs. We are excited to run our curriculum with you at the next Admissions Professional Development day.
|
Thank you for helping us at the Spring Preview. We had a great crowd, and, all in all, the event was a huge success. We've wrapped up our spring events and are transitioning to summer conferences and then fall planning.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

- Tell us anything about yourself and/or your family: I survived survival training and shot a bazooka.
- What does your usual workday look like? In other words, what do you do? I'm transitioning from doing domicile work to the INTO job so right now I am analyzing the domicile applications and either making in-state / out-of-state decisions or contacting the student for more documents for their case. I have just started training to evaluate transfer credits which involves assessing transcripts and assigning the appropriate Mason equivalent course for that student's degree program.
- If you could be anyone from any time period, real or fiction person, who would you be? Myself - I've learned that everyone is a product of their time and that no one has it all. I'd rather live with the life choices I made than those made by someone else.
- What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most? I enjoy constantly learning new things, whether it's a government document I've never seen before or how to pronounce Chinese names (like the INTO presentation I went to yesterday).
- Before working in the Office of Admissions at Mason, what was the most unusual or interesting job you've ever had? It's a tie between providing written and oral briefings a Political Affairs Officer for the US State Dept and working as a Dietetic Intern doing tube feeds in the ICU.
- What are 3 words you would use to describe Mason? Expanding, emerging and accepting.

- What’s your favorite food? Icecream...Shhh don't you ever tell my kids that I said that!
- What does your usual workday look like? In other words, what do you do? Is there such a thing as "usual" in Admissions? :)...Most of my days consist of assisting Amy and some members of senior staff with anything they may be responding to/sending emails, scheduling/handling the logistics of meetings and events, processing/managing the paperwork for applicants who answered "yes" to the felony question.
- What do you like to do for fun? I love to dance, eat, make desserts, workout, spend time outdoors, read and try/learn new things.
- What are 3 words you would use to describe Mason? Diverse, well-being and thriving.
- You are happiest when...My kids are happy! Seeing their little faces light up and hearing them laugh fills my heart with joy, every.Single.Time!
- What aspect of your role do you
enjoy the most? I enjoy supporting Amy, and the team, accomplish the goals and objectives of our division. I also love working on the different pieces of a project and seeing the final result come to life after weeks/months of planning.
