Fall is in full swing, and so is our staff in the Office of Admissions! We have already had a flurry of events take place in October, including the Graduate College Fair, Fall Premiere and Alcanza. A huge thank you to our events team, and all our volunteers – we wouldn’t be able to do it without you.
|
I also had the privilege of attending the Outstanding Achievement Awards on Halloween to celebrate Ryan Barnett and Elena Johnson. Ryan received the Civility Star Award for his unending dedication to going above and beyond for all the students he works with, and for being a model colleague. Elena received the Outstanding Supervisor Award for her dedication and leadership to her team.

I am delighted to announce that Jennifer Flammia has joined our team full time as the Administrative Assistant/Office Manager! She will be providing support for the Dean’s Office and taking over some office management duties as well. We are very excited that she accepted the position and officially transitions on November 10.

I will see all of you for the Admissions Professional Development event on Friday, November 8 in Merten Hall, Room 1201 at 9 am. We will be spending the morning together as a group, and then breaking out for department retreats in the afternoon.

It's hard to believe it is already November! Where did the time go? We've had a strong November 1st Early Action deadline in terms of freshman application submissions, and are gearing up for our extended Early Action deadline of November 15th. Fall 2020 freshman applicants still have until 11:59 PM EST on November 15 to send us their applications and have them be considered as Early Action. In addition to assisting students with the application process, we are finishing up fall recruitment travel. Our team and I have traveled all over the country to spread the word about Mason and to make future Patriots! As we settle back into the office, we are preparing for our Counselor Fly-In on November 10 - 12, where we plan to welcome 36 secondary school counselors from the U.S. and abroad to our campus. We are also very busy reading applications as we ready ourselves for the mid-December Early Action decision release. We have selected a new vendor for our admission decision letters, Mosaic, and a group of us will be meeting with the vendor soon to work out logistics. COS will no longer be mailing decision letters starting with the Fall 2020 class. We are excited for what the remainder of fall will bring!

We wish Carleigh Pappas, Admissions Counselor, well in her new role at Germanna Community College. Her last day with us was October 24. We also wish Dylan Henry, Senior Admissions Counselor, well with his new role as Assistant Director of Admissions on the graduate side for SCHAR.

Finally….it feels like fall (for better or worse), and Admissions Operations is fully in fall mode in terms of processing and procedure.
|
The Transfer and Domicile Teams are very busy processing new applications for Spring 2020 transfer, which opened on August 1. We recently passed the GAA/priority application deadline for Spring 2020 on October 1, and are busy processing those applications. The Fall 2020 transfer application will open on December 1.
|
The Transfer Credit Evaluation team has been busy evaluating newly admitted students for Spring 2020 and cross-training (especially on international) and updating the equivalencies via the online tool. Please note that automated notifications are still going out to students, regardless of IE status, once an evaluation is complete. We are fully ready for the December/January Spring 2020 orientation dates.

The Document Center continues to run smoothly, processing documents with minimal delays or issues. Major thanks to this team for continuing to allow the rest of the office to operate efficiently.

The Graduate Operations team remains busy working on Spring 2020 and Fall 2020 applicants. We are preparing for our busiest period of the entire year, simultaneously working on multiple start terms and audit at the same time. We are currently working to incorporate a Summer start term, as well as work with our Wiley partners to better understand their processes.
|
The INTO Mason team is continuing to look for areas where we can find efficiencies, as well as ensure that our communication with INTO is as clear as possible. Ousswa attended the first ever INTO conference in San Diego to learn more about how other centers are working, as well as lend her expertise to the group, at large. She was also recently named the new Assistant Director of INTO Transcript Evaluation. A search is ongoing for her replacement.

The mailed invitations are dropping this Friday, November 8! The deadline to register is December 13. We are gearing up for increased phone and email volume. We are using a new registration system this year built using SalesForce and Touchnet.
|
Tours are booked through the fall semester and spring semester availability will be released in December. We've also fully enrolled our dual enrollment programs (Fairfax Match, Loudoun Science, Gov School).
|
Envision invites will drop again in December. We are working on some additional partnership opportunities with World Strides.
|
|
The Counselor Fly-In is this weekend! We will spend the rest of the semester planning for a busy spring yield season. We are also so happy to welcome our new Event Coordinator - Ashley King!

What does your usual workday look like? My job is part Processor, part Advisor, part Problem Solver, and everything in between. I process and make decisions on applications, answer questions and assist students through the entire process to help them enroll at Mason. Every day presents a new experience!

Best vacation you have been on? Honeymooning at Disney World during a hurricane. It was still "The Most Magical Place on Earth", and bonus, the lines were short!

What are 3 words you would use to describe Mason? Growing, Innovative, Unique
|
Do you like sports? If so, what’s your favorite team? Cleveland (aka Believeland!) Browns, Indians, Cavs
|
What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most? I have the opportunity to connect with people from around the world, to learn their stories, and help them achieve their goals. I am constantly amazed and inspired by the Mason community!
|
What is your favorite food? TACOS!! I can eat tacos for every meal and never get tired of them (based on a true story.)

What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most? I am privileged to work with all areas of Admissions, and I love learning about each team contributes to our overall mission.
|
What is the most important thing you've learned in the last 5 years? I have learned that adapting to change and being patient can get you through anything. Even on the most challenging day those two skills will get you through it.
|
If you could be anyone from any time period, real or fictional, who would you be? Jeff Goldblum, of course! He lives a charmed life.
|
What does your usual workday look like? In other words, what do you do? I think the better question is what don't I do? My days vary widely from one day to the next. I could be working on big purchases, or reviewing contracts; reconciling our budgets; working on hiring a new employee; or reviewing travel approvals.
|
|
How long have you been part of Mason? No kidding, over half my life! I went to Mason as an undergrad, worked here as a student employee, and then moved into a full time position after graduation. I spent quiet a few years in University Information before moving over to Admissions.
