Team updates

Dean's Office by Amy Takayama-Perez
Can you believe we are officially half way through the year? I’m really proud of everything we have accomplished so far including the first cycle of our Admissions Mentor Program, launch of SalesForce for our graduate population, improving many of our processes and hosting thousands of students for events on and off-campus. Thank you for all of your hard work on behalf of our office and the Division for Enrollment Management.

This Friday, June 7 we’ll kick off our summer events with our Admissions Professional Development day. As you may have noticed on the attached schedule, this year’s event will be centered on team building and student experiences. We hope that you enjoy the informative and interactive sessions that we planned for this summer's event.

In July, we will host our annual summer training sessions. Thank you to all who have worked hard to put this together. Please work with your supervisor to make time to attend or watch the recorded sessions. We will also host hundreds of high school students for the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment (WYSE), and two sessions of The Washington Journalism and Media Conference (WJMC). The summer conferences are critical to the success of our recruitment and revenue generation goals, we still need help on July 7 and July 14 so I hope that will make every effort to participate and volunteer. Thank you to those of you who already signed up to help!

Again, thank you for everything you do. I look forward to spending the day with you all on Friday!
Relationship Management (RM) by Melissa Bevacqua
The Relationship Management Team is recovering from an awesome recruitment cycle bringing in, with the support of our entire Admissions #OneTeam and division, another very large freshman class. We are still working hard to continue building relationships with our deposited incoming freshmen to keep the summer melt blues away, and we continue to review, accept and allow out-of-state and international freshmen to deposit for the fall 2019 semester.

For in-state fall 2019 freshmen, we are full, only reviewing special circumstances and accommodating those who requested an extension. We offered a deposit extension to fall 2019 freshmen who are out-of-state and international until May 15th; however, as stated, we will continue to take deposits from these folks through the start of the fall semester. For transfer, some members of our team are assisting the Operations folks in reviewing transfer applications for the fall 2019 semester. There is no rest for the weary, but we are enjoying helping to bring in this next class of Patriots! Our summer will be spent doing a lot of planning for the upcoming cycle to ensure we are ready, culminating with a team retreat in August at SMSC in Front Royal. Cannot wait!
Operations by Andrew Bunting
The Admissions Operations Team remains busy in our respective areas supporting our applicants and new students.

The Transfer Credit Evaluation team continues to do amazing work by efficiently and accurately evaluating transfer credit for all of our new students, including our INTO UTP students (international transfer). They are currently working on Fall 2019 admits and IEs. Automated notifications go out to students, regardless of IE status, once an evaluation is complete. This team is currently preparing to work closely with the Registrar to further advance out credit evaluation process, specifically around time-limited transfer equivalencies. Additionally, we will begin working on AP/IB credits for new freshmen over the summer.

The Document Center continues to run smoothly, processing documents with minimal delays or issues. Major thanks to this team for continuing to allow the rest of the office to operate efficiently. The team is ready for the CTUPs and HTFTs that are going to be coming in.

The Graduate Operations team remains busy working on Fall 2019 applicants, though most deadlines have passed and the application influx is slowing. Updates are constantly being made to improve the application and review system. Graduate Operations leadership has conducted visits with the academic units to solicit further feedback and will be compiling that feedback into a working document.

The INTO Mason team is continuing to look for areas where we can find efficiencies, as well as ensure that our communication with INTO is as clear as possible. We conducted several meet-and-greet sessions with INTO staff members to help improve our relationship. The INTO Mason team continues to process applications for PW and GPW students within the designated SLA. We are working to further enhance the cascade process, especially for the UTP (transfers).

As always, please let us know if we can assist you in any way.
Washington Scholars Program (WSP) and K12 Partnerships by Elena Johnson
WSP
Thank you to all who have signed up to support our arrival days. We are still in need of help on July 7 and 14. You can sign up here.

The schedules for WYSE and WJMC are almost final, and we are excited to welcome new speakers into our lineup. We have a big day planned at National Geographic including a meeting with an Explorer, a public speaking bootcamp, and an action plan to reduce plastic waste. We are also welcoming Daniela Pierre Bravo and Shermichael Singleton from MSNBC. WYSE will focus on plastics and marine debris while WJMC will simulate a newsroom working on Solutions Journalism stories on health, violence, and education.

We are excited to run through a WJMC simulation with the team at the Admissions Professional Development event. You will all be part of the newsroom at the Rutland Herald in Rutland, Vermont. Feel free to research your new town before the simulation on Friday!

  1. Do you have a favorite quote or movie line? Share it with us! Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.
  2. What does your usual workday look like? In other words, what do you do? Every day is different but I'm mainly focused on keeping the UG side of things (TargetX/Salesforce/Banner) chugging along. I’ve been called 'closer of loops' and I fix the broken things.
  3. Do you like sports? If so, what's your favorite team? Liverpool FC.
  4. What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most? Making it easier (or trying to) for the rest of the staff to do their jobs.
  5. What are 3 words you would use to describe Mason? Inclusive, Challenging, Evolving.
  6. What is your favorite part about working with us? Everyone's willingness to pitch in and help if they can.

  1. Where would you like to travel to? I have always wanted to visit a number of countries in Asia. The top three on my list are Japan, Thailand, and Korea.
  2. Before working in the Office of Admissions at Mason, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had? When I finished my undergraduate studies I began working as an insurance salesman in rural Eastern North Carolina. I was going to door to door selling policies which lead to some interesting, and not always pleasant interactions with customers. Let’s just say my career in the insurance industry was short lived. After that I worked for a local newspaper company where I was the Advertising Manager. I sold ad space in the newspaper, mostly to the same businesses that I tried to sell insurance to. That position taught me a lot, but the most valuable thing that I took away from my time as an advertising manager was how to work with business owners and truly build a partnership that would last.
  3. What are 3 words you would use to describe Mason? I would describe Mason as Diverse, Impactful, and Growing.
  4. What does your usual workday look like? In other words, what do you do? A typical work day for me consists of student and parent interactions via email, calls, texts, and face to face meetings. I’ve also been spending time reaching out to high school and independent counselors to introduce myself as their new Mason regional representative. When I’m not working with students and counselors I’m mostly working on various projects to help out with work around the office. In the Fall I’m looking forward to an abundance of high school visits, college fairs, regional interviews, and other admissions related events.
  5. What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most? I greatly enjoy working with students and families to help them achieve their academic goals. The admissions process can be incredibly stressful for some individuals, and I cherish that I get to be a part of easing some of those stresses during this process. There is nothing more rewarding than having a student tell you that you’ve made a difference in their lives, and that’s what I love so much about this position.
  6. Do you like sports? If so, what’s your favorite team? Sports have been a big part of my life since I was little and I love playing and watching just about any sport under the sun. College basketball is my favorite by far, and my favorite team is Duke. I also love college football and adamantly cheer on my alma mater, East Carolina, even though they’ve been struggling the past few seasons.
Outside of college sports I’m a huge professional soccer and hockey fan. My loyalty for soccer resides with the Seattle Sounders, but I also enjoy cheering for Borussia Dortmund (Germany) and Chelsea FC (England). When it comes to hockey I’ve always been a Carolina Hurricanes fan.
